چکیده

We consider the task of feature selection for value function approximation in reinforcement learning. A promising approach consists in combining the Least-Squares Temporal Difference (LSTD) algorithm with `1-regularization, which has proven to be effective in the supervised learning community. This has been done recently whit the LARS-TD algorithm, which replaces the projection operator of LSTD with an `1penalized projection and solves the corresponding fixed-point problem. However, this approach is not guaranteed to be correct in the general offpolicy setting. We take a different route by adding an `1-penalty term to the projected Bellman residual, which requires weaker assumptions while offering a comparable performance. However, this comes at the cost of a higher computational complexity if only a part of the regularization path is computed. Nevertheless, our approach ends up to a supervised learning problem, which let envision easy extensions to other penalties.

Adaptive Bases for Reinforcement Learning

We consider the problem of reinforcement learning using function approximation, where the approximating basis can change dynamically while interacting with the environment. A motivation for such an approach is maximizing the value function fitness to the problem faced. Three errors are considered: approximation square error, Bellman residual, and projected Bellman residual. Algorithms under the...

Estimation and Selection via Absolute Penalized Convex Minimization And Its Multistage Adaptive Applications

The ℓ1-penalized method, or the Lasso, has emerged as an important tool for the analysis of large data sets. Many important results have been obtained for the Lasso in linear regression which have led to a deeper understanding of high-dimensional statistical problems. In this article, we consider a class of weighted ℓ1-penalized estimators for convex loss functions of a general form, including ...

Is the Bellman residual a bad proxy?

This paper aims at theoretically and empirically comparing two standard optimization criteria for Reinforcement Learning: i) maximization of the mean value and ii) minimization of the Bellman residual. For that purpose, we place ourselves in the framework of policy search algorithms, that are usually designed to maximize the mean value, and derive a method that minimizes the residual ‖T∗vπ − vπ...

- Penalized Quantile Regression in High - Dimensional Sparse Models

We consider median regression and, more generally, quantile regression in high-dimensional sparse models. In these models the overall number of regressors p is very large, possibly larger than the sample size n, but only s of these regressors have non-zero impact on the conditional quantile of the response variable, where s grows slower than n. Since in this case the ordinary quantile regressio...

Coordinate Descent Algorithms for Lasso Penalized Regression

Imposition of a lasso penalty shrinks parameter estimates toward zero and performs continuous model selection. Lasso penalized regression is capable of handling linear regression problems where the number of predictors far exceeds the number of cases. This paper tests two exceptionally fast algorithms for estimating regression coefficients with a lasso penalty. The previously known ℓ2 algorithm...
